From 6 to 10 July 2026, the World Congress of Constitutional Law 2026 took place at the Universidad Externado de Colombia in Bogotá. The event brings together legal scholars, representatives of state institutions, and other actors from civil society and the business community from around the world to discuss issues relating to constitutions, constitutional jurisprudence, human rights, the separation of powers, and political systems, as well as current challenges in constitutional law more broadly.
Prof. Dr. Emanuel V. Towfigh contributed as a speaker to three workshops. In the workshop “Constitutional Sciences and Contemporary Human Rights Challenges”, which addressed the adaptation of constitutions to societal change and the protection of human rights, he brought his perspective as a legal economist and empirical legal scholar to the discussion, demonstrating how empirically informed methods can help refine constitutional concepts of protection against discrimination (“A Statistically Informed Heuristic for Equality Rights: Bridging Formal and Material Equality”). In the workshop “Elections in the Age of Global Mobility”, which comparatively examined the constitutional and democratic implications of extraterritorial voting, he addressed the question of the legitimacy of borders (“Borders, Citizenship, and Global Inequality. What Barriers, Pushbacks, and Passport Controls Reveal About Our Understanding of the Equality of Humankind”). In the workshop “Are political parties responsible for the democratic crisis?”, he spoke about the role of political parties in different constitutional systems (“Between Mediation and Power: Political Parties in Democratic and Authoritarian Constitutional Orders”).
